Welcome to the cooking area of the Food – a fact of life website. Discover cooking resources, activities and practical ideas for children and young people aged 3 to 16 years. Food – a fact of life provides evidence-based teaching resources to help educators develop pupils’ cooking skills, food preparation knowledge and confidence in the kitchen.
Our resources support practical food education from early years through to secondary education and can be used within food and nutrition lessons or across the wider curriculum. They can be adapted to suit different ages, abilities, learning needs, teaching approaches and available time.
The cooking resources help pupils develop practical food skills through hands-on learning and real-life experiences. Activities are designed to build confidence, independence and competence in the kitchen.
Key cooking skills include:
- Measuring and weighing ingredients
- Chopping, slicing and peeling safely
- Mixing and combining ingredients
- Using kitchen equipment correctly
- Following recipes and instructions
- Understanding cooking methods
- Preparing and cooking balanced meals
- Food presentation and sensory evaluation
Pupils also learn how ingredients function in recipes and how cooking methods affect taste, texture and nutrition.
